John 6 | Stepping Stones

December 6th, John 6

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life”.

In John 6 we see many people who were simply following Jesus for the free food. Once they understand that Jesus is not a spiritual genie, they bounce. In our consumeristic culture, it’s easy for us to approach Jesus with this mentality. It begs the question, what do we use Jesus as a stepping stone to?

Do you “believe in Jesus” just to get rid of your guilt? All the while you have no deep affection for Him? Do you “believe in Jesus” because your parents told you to, and you prefer peace at the holidays? Do you “believe in Jesus” because you think He will bless your life with material wealth?

The litmus test is this, if you didn’t get what your hearts desire was, but you got Jesus, would all be ok? If what Jesus says is true about himself, that He is truly the fulfillment of the deepest longings of our hearts, nothing else could hold the weight of that place in our hearts. Isn’t this why when we seek our ultimate satisfaction in other things, they always end up less than desired?

Sex? Money? Power? Relationship? All good things in their right proportions… but if you try to make them central in your life and hang your deep longing for ultimate satisfaction on them, they break down.

Let us not use Jesus as a stepping stone to what we really want, let us desire Him for who He is.

Reflection Question:

What are your prone to place before Jesus in your life? How can you repent of this?

Repenting with you,

Josh.
