Morning Devotion | Lessons From Leviticus RE: Sexual Ethics
I've recently been reading through the OT as an overview, trying to read it widely, not deeply so that I can notice patterns and key themes. I'm currently in Leviticus... which is a slog. But it's reminding me about the importance of holiness.
In Lev. 18 God outlines for Israel some of their sexual ethics. He begins by saying "I am the lord your God, you shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt... you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan. You shall not walk in their statues. You shall follow my rules and keep my statues and walk in them. I am the Lord your God." This struck me.
What if it said to us "you shall not do what is normal in (insert your country here)." Not looking at porn is counter-cultural. Not saying yes to any pleasure we want is counter cultural. Fighting to be pure in our hearts is counter-cultural. Seeking to consider the opposite sex as more than their appearance is counter cultural.
We have been seduced to think sexual relations outside of their proper containers (marriage) are normal, ok, and the way it should be. It's not. Be reminded today the world is selling you millions of lies.
Think about how counter-cultural this word from God to Israel was. In a time period where the abuse, prostitution, owning, and man-handling of women was normal. God steps in and says "none of that for my people". What would He say to us? What has become normal in your culture that God is against?
Fight your sin. Its implications reach further than just you. God is for you, not against you in his rules and laws.
Warmly,
Josh.
Do not be surprised when in your journey with God through this life you encounter seasons that are hard. Difficult. Long. You will face times that wear you down to the bone.
Is your whole life oriented around following your rabbi and savior? To be with Him. To become like Him. To do as He did?
When theological truths for the mind seem insufficient, the simultaneous question and request stands: “God, do you see me and can you show me that you do?”
Is there any encouragement for us when the Christian journey feels long and difficult?
What does Jesus mean in John 14:15 when He says: “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
In today's fast-paced world, where hustle and productivity often overshadow tranquility and reflection, slowing down holds significant importance in our Christian walk.
What hope do you have when your suffering has not yet been redeemed?
10 quotes from a sermon on how difficult relationships grow our faith.
God grows us by exposing us to all these things, so as to overwhelm us with a sense of our own inadequacy, and to drive us to cling to him more closely.
Healthy conviction always leads us back to God, regardless of if it is more tender or more stern type.
I sometimes pray ‘Lord give me no more and no less self-knowledge than I can at this moment make a good use of.’
Paul is not saying that your relationships will flourish when the hard to love person learns the fruits of the spirit. He says it will flourish when you cultivate the fruits of the spirit despite what other people do.
God counts every tear you cry. God sees your tears fall. He counts them in his bottle according to Psalm 56:8. He does this because He loves you.
Church feels like a chore. My heart feels apathetic to worship and the sermon and I'm a pastor! I desperately want my heart to be alive again to the Sunday worship service. While I do not know why God might bring us to seasons like this, I do believe that He uses all things for our good.
