Normal Sunday Scriptures | Does God Bless Mundane Bible Reading?

Does Bible reading do anything when it feels boring and mundane? That was my thought as I put my bible up after having read and prayed.

I sat down during my day to read my Bible. I went downstairs to grab a drink, orange juice to be exact. Went back upstairs to do my daily reading, which if I’m honest I wasn’t thrilled about. I sat down, pulled out my journal, and began to read Luke chapter 2. A habit I’ve gotten into is stopping in the middle of my reading to pray what my heart is feeling and thinking about the text. It was hard to concentrate.

My mind kept wandering and I had to keep drawing my attention back to God and the Bible. After about 20 minutes I closed my bible, a few notes and thoughts jotted in my journal, and felt almost ashamed: My Bible Reading felt unspectacular today. Does God work in our Bible reading when it’s normal, mundane, or even boring?

God Works In the normal

I am reminded of Psalm 1 - The man who delights in the Word of God is described:

“He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season”

If you watch seeds, crops, fruits… you will never see the growth with your eye. But far be it from us to think that nothing is going on under the surface. Roots are absorbing nutrients, leaves are getting sunlight, fruit is ripening. These things are not instant or fast, but slow grown growth.

Our Bible reading is like that. We won’t always have glorious “mountaintop” experiences. Sometimes it will feel quite unspectacular. And that’s ok. God is doing far more in your daily bible reading than you can presently see. Do not give up. The fruit will come. Perhaps today’s mundane bible reading is the water your soul needs for tomorrow.

Staying in the word with you,

Josh.

Our Bible reading isn’t always glorious, but if it always is mundane, the problem might be your method. Below are some articles to help you read:
